The late, great Kobe Bryant was celebrated for being a Girl Dad. The National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations (“NCWBA”) recognizes GOOD Guys. And the National Association of Women Lawyers (“NAWL”) honors men who “Lead By Example.” Men no longer need to model themselves on negative forms of masculinity to be respected, admired, even loved. But separating some facets of traditional masculinity from others and choosing to model a better version of masculinity can be challenging and, sometimes, very hard. When done successfully, though, the result can be a richer, more satisfying, more gratifying, better, and happier life for the man himself and everyone in his life.

It's time, therefore, for male attorneys to stop acquiescing to a model of masculinity that undermines them and their effectiveness as lawyers. It’s time for male attorneys to embrace a version of manhood that allows them to thrive individually and contribute to more inclusive workplace cultures.

Book cover for Reinventing Masculinity: The Liberating Power of Compassion and ConnectionWe invite you to join us for a webinar on Reinventing Masculinity in the Law. The webinar is the culmination of a pilot program based on the book, Reinventing Masculinity: The Liberating Power of Compassion and Connection by Edward Adams and Ed Frauenheim. The webinar will be facilitated by Ed Frauenheim, Dr. Ellen Ostrow, a coach and consultant focused on wellbeing and inclusion in the legal profession, and Dr. Jonathan W. Kanter, Director of the Center for the Science of Social Connection at the University of Washington.

During this virtual event, Ed, Dr. Ostrow, and Dr. Kanter will discuss key themes on the topic of masculinity and inclusion in the law. They also will facilitate discussion with male attorneys who have spent two months practicing a set of research-backed behaviors to evolve as men.

Join us and learn more about how we reinvent masculinity in the law.

    Key Takeaways from the Webinar:

    • How a conventional, “confined” versions of manhood contributes to a hyper-masculine legal profession looks down on vulnerability, lionizes rugged individualism and obsesses over winning.
    • The ways a “liberating” masculinity enables men and everyone around them to thrive at work and beyond.
    • How reinventing masculinity in the law can lead to happier, healthier male attorneys and a better, more inclusive legal profession.

Traditionally, DEI efforts around racial/ethnic diversity have focused on African Americans/Blacks, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, Hispanic/Latino/a/x, and Native Americans/American Indians. But in doing so, a broad group of people of Middle Eastern and North African (“MENA”) heritage has been overlooked. The US Census has historically counted these individuals as “White” or “Caucasian” even though many who identify as MENA do not see themselves or identify that way and experience forms of prejudice, bigotry, and discrimination not unlike that experienced by other people of color. Efforts are underway to change the Census designation. Some organizations within the legal profession are already including MENA as a diversity category and establishing MENA affinity groups and bar associations. It’s time that DEI efforts in the broader legal profession fully embrace the MENA community, too. Please join us as we explore who this community is, the issues community members face, and how the legal profession can better include MENA under the DEI umbrella.
